User-Defined Tags

Steam’s user-defined tag system allows users to apply tags to games, which can include genres, themes, attributes, or any other descriptive terms. This feature is designed to enhance game discovery on the platform by providing more ways for users to find games that match their interests. The most popular tags for a game are displayed on its product page, and users can browse games by these tags.

Game developers have control over the tags applied to their games. They can use Steam’s tag wizard to select and prioritize tags, with the top five tags given extra weight in defining the game’s genre and characteristics. However, users can also apply tags to games, and these user-defined tags can influence the tag order if enough users apply them.

We use user-defined tags to help enrich our Steam Map.

Where you can use tags

  • Data Explorer: include or exclude specific tags from your search results.
  • Game Directory: add up to 10 tags under Advanced Filters. Games must have every tag you choose, so each one narrows the list further.
  • Concept Compass: pick the tags that describe your concept in the Tags & Style step to help find the most relevant competitors.
  • Feature reports: see which tags are most common among games that use a feature, under Often tagged with.
